Acid Attack Survivor & Activist
Natalia Ponce de León was the victim of an attack with a chemical agent on March 27, 2014. After surviving the attack and after multiple operations, Natalia made the decision that she wanted to dedicate her life to the defense and promotion of human rights for the victims of attacks with chemical agents. Therefore, in 2015, the foundation that bears her name was created to advise the victims on their rights. In 2016, Natalia pushed for the Natalia Ponce de León Law, which increased the penalties for crimes with chemical agents. Mrs. Ponce de León was chosen as one of the best leaders of 2016 by the Colombian magazine Semana and received the "Outlook Inspirations" prize awarded by the BBC, as an inspiring and courageous women. On March 29, 2017, she was one of 12 women chosen for fighting for human rights and received the "Women with Courage" award given by the First Lady of the United States.
