Biram Dah Abeid

Anti-slavery activist

Biram Dah  Abeid is a leading Mauritanian anti-slavery activist, lawyer, researcher, and President of the Initiative for the Resurgence of the Abolitionist Movement (IRA). His organization focuses on the fight against the casted slavery (transferred by heritage) in Mauritania, which affects descendants of the Haratin (called black moors) community. Dah Abeid has seen many injustices throughout his lifetime. The grandchild of a slave, he has been fighting for the rights of the Haratin to the point of enduring arrest and torture. In 2013, Biram Dah Abeid received the Front Line Award for Human Rights Defenders at Risk and the UN Human Rights Prize.  In July 2016, he received the Trafficking in Persons Report Hero Award from the United States Secretary of State John Kerry.  This was only two months after he served a 18 months sentence for having organized a public protest against slavery in 201
