Edna Adan Ismail, a Somali nurse was married to former Somali president and prime minister, Mohammed Haji Ibrahims Egal. She worked majorly with the World Health Organisation (WHO), with her last role being the WHO representative for the Republic of Djibouti. In 2002, after her retirement, Edna built and opened the Edna Adan University Teaching and Referral Hospital i Somaliland and in 2012 she opened the Edna Adan University. She serves on many different commissions and boards, which include holding posts as President of the Association for Victims of Torture and Vice-Chair of the Presidential Commission on Higher Education in Somaliland. Moreover, she has been recognised for her actions as one of the 100 most inspiring individuals delivering for women, as well as being voted one of the 100 most influential people in Africa.
